A Conference in Honor of Jonathan Bernard
June 17–18, 2022
University of Washington School of Music (Seattle, WA)

Call for Papers

A conference in honor of Dr. Jonathan Bernard will be held at the University of Washington School of Music in Seattle on June 17–18, 2022. The conference coincides with Jonathan’s retirement from the university after 35 years of service!

We welcome proposals for short papers (20 minutes) that address topics related to any aspect of Jonathan’s wide scholarly output, including:

  • Styles and genres that appear frequently in his writing (especially minimalism and progressive rock music)
  • Monumental composers that he has written about extensively (e.g. Bartók, Carter, Durand, Feldman, Ligeti, Messiaen, Monk, Reich, Varèse, Zappa)

The conference will include a Friday evening concert featuring works by these composers, as well as the world premiere of a work commissioned for the occasion by composer Joël-François Durand.

The timeline is as follows:

  • Call for papers circulated: October 6, 2021
  • Proposals due: December 21, 2021
  • Authors notified: February 8, 2022
  • Registration due: March 20, 2022

Email anonymized proposals to bernardconference@ku.edu in PDF format (350 words, up to 2 additional pages for examples and supplementary materials). In the body of the email, please include: author name, contact information (phone and email), name of your presentation, and any audio-visual needs for your presentation.

If you’ve never experienced Seattle in the summer, mid-late June is a particularly glorious time in which, for a few short weeks, the rain stops and the sun shines for 16 hours a day. We are operating under the assumption that we will be able to hold this event safely in person, but alternative arrangements will be made if the need arises.

Hope to see you in Seattle!

Chris Stover (co-organizer)
